East Godavari death toll put at 14 Kakinada, Nov 8 (INN): East Godavari district Collector M Ravi Chandra on Monday put the death toll due to super cyclone Jal, which lashed the coastal districts of the state at 14. Talking to media persons after reviewing the rescue and relief works with the officials concerned over the situation in the district, Mr Ravi Chandra directed officials of public distribution system to disburse 20 kg rice and 5 litres of kerosene to each family in flood affected areas. The distribution of rice and kerosene would start from Monday and be completed by November 17, he stated.
The Collector said the district has reported 14 deaths so far and three persons were reported missing. The identities of victims are yet to be ascertained. Only after the identification of deaths, the compensation of Rs 2 lakh will be released to their next of kin, he said. Mr Ravi Chandra stated that Revenue officials are yet to estimate the losses occurred due to properties. He added that the estimation work would begin after water recedes.
The compensation for property loss would be paid through cheques or directly through their bank accounts, the Collector said. He added that the officials would take the damaged houses photos as documentary proof for estimating the damage. He directed the officials to take relief operations on war-footing in the flood-ravaged areas without giving scope for any complaints. M Subrahmanyam, the special officer deputed by government to coordinate with district Collectors over the relief operations and Joint Collector K Sasidhar were present at the meeting.
