'Minor' fire in VSP, loss put at Rs 100 cr Visakhapatnam, April 10 (INN): In spite of the officials at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant describing the fire which broke out in the CC-2 wing of the plant on Sunday as 'minor', the blaze is believed to have caused a loss of about Rs 100 crore.
According to fire department sources, the fire was detected in the Medium Merchant Structural Mill (MMSM) department on Sunday at mid-morning. The fire department sources said that initial reports suggest that some leaked liquid fuel was ignited by a short circuit, leading to the blaze.
However the VSP officials described the blaze as 'minor', and clarified that the operations in the steel plant were not affected at all by the fire. They also hastened to add that there were no human casualties reported in the incident.
However, nearly 60 tons of molten steel spilled over from the boilers while the workers at the plants were either busy with the firefighting efforts or had evacuated to safety while the blaze was being controlled. The officials estimated the loss to be around Rs 100 crore. However, the exact loss would be known only after an investigation, they added.
