Youth thrown out of running train by eunuchs

VIJAYAWADA: A 25-year-old youth was severely injured when he was thrown out of a running train near Eluru by eunuchs (Hijras) recently, and his right hand and leg needed to be amputated to save his life.

According to delayed reports and the first-person account, Nimmala Ranjit Kumar of Eluru, an MCA postgraduate of the 2010 batch, secured a job with a private company in Hyderabad three months ago and was returning home on a short vacation for the first time after getting employment.

He reached Vijayawada from Hyderabad on the morning of May 9 and boarded the Ratnachal Inter-City Express train at Vijayawada. Ranjit was standing close to the door so that he could get off the train as soon as it arrived on the platform at Eluru.

As the train was nearing the Eluru station, a group of eunuchs, who were moving from compartment to compartment collecting alms from passengers, approached him. Willingly, he took out his wallet and gave them Rs 5. Not satisfied with the amount, they demanded more from him and, upon refusal, snatched his purse which contained Rs 900.

As he was pleading with them to give him back his purse, the train left the station where he should have got down. When an anxious Ranjit persisted with his demand, the eunuchs pushed him out of the running train in a cold-blooded manner.

He lay there for a while after hitting the ground and was conscious till a 108 ambulance carried him to the government general hospital in Eluru and from there to a private hospital in Vijayawada where doctors amputated his right hand and the leg up to his knee to save his life.

On learning of the news, Devaki, who had been eagerly waiting in Eluru for the arrival of her son, felt like the whole world came crashing down upon her. She said she had educated her son with the income she earned by stitching clothes. His father Narayana is a small-time worker. She said she had to take care of the education of her daughter also.

Ranjit's uncle Prasad said he submitted a memorandum to divisional railway manager Anurag seeking justice
