Vizag agency area in grip of cold wave Visakhapatnam: Agency villages in the district are reeling under severe cold with the temperatures dipping far below normal for the past few days. The depression in the Bay of Bengal is adding fuel to the fire.
Tuesday saw the lowest ever daytime minimum temperature of the season at 0.8' Celsius in Lambasingi, which is about 3,000 feet above the mean sea level (MSL), while it recorded 1' Celsius on Sunday. Lambasingi had earlier recorded the lowest temperature at zero degrees Celsius on December 25, 2008.
At Chintapalle, which is also at the same height above the MSL, the mercury settled below 2' Celsius on Tuesday and the temperatures started declining over the past three days.
The temperature was 3.6' Celsius three days ago. As a measure of respite from the biting chills, people are huddling around bonfires and embers of traditional hearths.
'Dawn is only breaking at 10 am as the sky is covered with dense fog and sun is sliding into horizon too early by 3 pm,' said Somu, a villager of Chintapalle. Normal life in the Agency came to a standstill under the impact of cold.
Schools and offices are being opened only after 10 am and close by 4 pm as darkness descends early. The same weather situation may prevail for a few more days, met officials said.
