Telugu was in its high level when Dr Bhadriraju Krishnamurthy MA PhD was the visiting-cum-part-time Telugu Professor at University of California at Berkeley five decades back. Dr Kothapalli Veerabhadra Rao MA PhD, Prof of Telugu in the Indian Languages Deptt of Delhi University in 1968, suppressed the idea of sending some one to Chicago, California etc. He insisted for an extra degree in English Language also along with Telugu to teach Telugu to American students in those Universities. However by hook or crook the present old man Dr Velcheru Narayana Rao (of Eluru)joined the Telugu Deptt of University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1975 and still glued to the seat without retiring inspite of his age being more than super annuation. He must be relieved first. Dr Bh. Krishnamurthi somehow returned to Andhra U Waltair to sit as the Prof & Head of the Tel. Deptt and ultimately retired. I believe he is still alive somewhere in Krishna Dt of A.P.
The special team from USA visited India to appoint a suitable candidate for the seat of Professor of Telugu in South Asian Deptt in California, Chicago, Wisconsin and interviewed the local stalwarts in Language and literature of Telugu in some colleges in Madras. They interviewed Prof. PRP Francis, Head of the Deptt of Telugu in Madras Christian College & Vidwan Sri Bitra Bhavanarayana BA BOL MA of Sir Thyagaraya College, Madras for the post. Though both the candidates possess a vast experience of teaching Telugu (30 years) they did not have PhDs.
Prof PRP Francis refused to travel to USA because he was retiring that year. However they advised Prof Bitra Bhavanarayana to get his PhD and inform.In the year 1975 Prof Bitra Bhavanarayana retired from service and was able to complete his PhD degree in Telugu Grammar from Mysore University in the year 1980 only.By then he was a Vidwan, BA, BOL, MA, PhD all in Telugu Language & Literature.Dr Bitra Bhavanarayana died in December 1990 in Madras. But to everybodys surprise Dr Velcheru Narayanarao from Govt Arts College, Eluru, who got his PhD (1975)that year only, joined the Telugu Deptt of Wisconsin University and still he is continuing the job inspite of his old-age.
