Am I Expecting Too Much?

What the hell is with parents these days? I’ve been thinking about this since yesterday evening, and it still burns my heart. My daughter came home from track yesterday, to tell me that no fewer than 10 of her teammates were kicked off the team yesterday, a mere 3 days before Division Finals. Apparently, a very popular boy on the track team decided he was going to throw a party at his house Sunday night, because his parents were out of town for the latter part of the weekend. The boy and those of his friends who helped him plan it, decided to spike the punch they served to their friends in plastic cups they simply set out on the table. No one knew there was alcohol in the punch other than those boys, and a few of their closest friends. Rumor is, they did a lot more than just listen to music and hang out too, if you know what I mean. We’re talking about 12 and 13-year-old children here. I don’t know exactly who found out and when, or whether any parents came forth, although I seriously doubt that. I’m sure there was talk amongst the students. I have a few things to say here… First of all, what parent in their right mind leaves a 12 or 13-year-old child alone overnight? Am I the only one who thinks it’s irresponsible parenting? Oh sure, I am certain there are kids out there, who at that age, would be fine if left alone. Hell, elder girl is a very responsible and trustworthy young lady, and would probably do well if left alone overnight. But I couldn’t leave her alone. Wouldn’t. I may trust her, but I don’t trust that she’d be safe. What if she fell down the basement stairs because she tripped on the dog? What if that night my safe suburban home was broken into? What if there was a fire? The mom in me cannot do it. And let’s not forget that we are talking about a boy here, and it is a fact that most boys mature slower than girls. Secondly, what kind of parent allows their child to attend a party without verifying that responsible adults will supervise the party? Close to several dozens children were at that party, and not one of their parents insisted on speaking with an adult, or seeing an adult present? Did these parents even know that their kids were going to that party? Third, how the hell do you not know that your son or daughter is drunk when they get home, or hung-over when they wake up? Are parents so damn self-centered and busy that they can’t see it, or smell it? You want to know what’s wrong with kids today, there you go. The blame rests squarely on the shoulders of their parents. Sure, there are kids who screw off no matter what mom and dad do, but for the most part, if a kid has an issue, is running wild, or getting into trouble, you need look no farther than the tree the apple fell from for answers. I fully support the athletic department’s decision to boot those kids from the team. But even that is not enough. If I were one of those parents whose kid ended up drunk without knowing they were drinking alcohol, I’d have taken my child to the ER and then called the cops. If Junior wants to get shit-faced, that’s between him and his parents, but to spike the drinks of unsuspecting ‘friends’ is criminal. And you can bet I’d go after the parents too. I don’t care if they thought their angelic son was reading the Bible while they were gone. I asked my daughter if she had been invited to that party. She told me she hadn’t, and then added, 'But you wouldn’t have let me go even if I had.' Damn straight. So tell me your opinions… -Malathi
