The Bible is literary source of Christian religion. It is the inspired and inerrant word of God, a collection of 66 books (39 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament), written by over 40 different authors, from 1500 B.C to about 100 A.D on three continents, in three languages: Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek. These men wrote as they were moved by the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:21). They wrote not in words of human wisdom but in words taught by the Holy Spirit (I Corinthians 2:13). As we can see that the Bible was written centuries ago, it has many verses in it that relate to science. One would expect that the lack of modern scientific knowledge of the writers would show through on this ancient document. But instead, there is an amazing treatment of science in the Bible that transcends human invention and the knowledge of the period in which it was produced. Let us have a look about what Bible has to say and the scientific discoveries made by mankind. Date: 1500 B.C 1. God gave the Israelites many teachings about the washing of hands and clothing. (Numbers 19:11-16) Date: 1865 A.D The importance of washing to prevent the spread of germs was not recognized until 1865 by Joseph Lister. Date: 1500 B.C 2. God told the Israelites to let the land rest every seventh year. (Leviticus 25:4) Date: 200 B.C Today, the practice of “letting the land rest” is known to be very important for the soil. This was not practiced, however, (except for the Israelites) until about 200 B.C by the Romans. Date: 1500 B.C 3. God told the Israelites in Genesis 17:12 “every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised…..” Date 1935 A.D Doctors discovered that the best day for a surgical procedure on a new born baby is on the eight day because the blood is at the height of clotting on this day. Date: 700 B.C 4. Isaiah 40:22 “It is He who sits above the circle of the earth………….” Tells us that the earth is round. Date: 1600 A.D Most cultures before the 16th century believed that the earth was flat. Date : 2000 B.C 5. Job 26:7 tells us that “God hung the earth on nothing.” Date: Recent Most ancient cultures believed that the world was held up by something Date: 700 B.C and 1000 B.C 6. Job 38:20 speaks about light moving from one place to another. Date: 1600 A.D The fact that a light move was not known until Newton discovered the motion of the light in 1600. Date: 600 B.C 9. The prophet Jeremiah said that “no person could count all the stars”. Jeremiah 33:22 Date: Recent At one time in history some people believed that we could count and even name all the stars. Astronomers now understand that the stars are uncountable. Date: 950 B.C 10. Ecclesiastes 1:6 describes global wind patterns. Date: 1960 A.D Global wind patterns were not understood until the 1960’s with the help of the satellites. Date: 2000 B.C, 950 B.C 11. Job 36:27-28 and Ecclesiastes 1:7 describe the water cycle. Date: 1700 A.D This process was not understood by scientist until Perrault and Mariotte in the 1700’s. Other Scriptures that Science Validates. 1. 2 peter 3:10 speaks about the atomic fission. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up 2. Hebrew 11:3 everything present in the earth is made up of subatomic particles, which are invisible. By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.
