Feb 19, 2007 - Two bombs explode aboard a train heading from India to Pakistan; at least 66 passengers, most of them Pakistanis, burn to death. May 18, 2007 - A bomb explodes during Friday prayers at a historic mosque in Hyderabad, killing 11 worshippers. Police later shoot dead five people in clashes with hundreds of enraged Muslims who protest against the attack. Aug 25, 2007 - Three coordinated explosions at an amusement park and a street stall in Hyderabad kill at least 40 people. May 13, 2008 - Seven bombs rip through the crowded streets of Jaipur, killing at least 63 people in markets and outside Hindu temples. July 25 - Eight small bombs hit Bangalore, killing at least one woman and wounding at least 15. July 26 - At least 16 small bombs explode in Ahmedabad, killing 45 people and wounding 161. A little-known group called the 'Indian Mujahideen' claims responsibility for the attack and the May 13 attack in Jaipur. Sept 13 - At least five bombs explode in crowded markets and streets in the heart of New Delhi, killing at least 23 people and injuring more than 100. The Indian Mujahideen again claims responsibility. Oct 30 - Eleven bomb blasts in quick succession ripped through Guwahati and three other towns, killing at least 48 people and wounding 235. No where in the world can we see this much of intensity of bomb attacks as it is in India in the recent years. After every attack, government, tries to identify the culprits, condemns the attacks, announces exgratia to the next of the kin of those killed and injured. How long does it continue with this kind of attitude? There are on an average, 3 major bomb attacks per year in India as shown above. In the U.S. there has not been a single attack after 9/11 attack. Due to these disturbances of several types, fear has gripped the minds of the citizens. If there is a fear, people can hardly enjoy their constitutional freedoms. The human rights are being violated. With international co-operation, India should see that violence is minimised in the society. Sophisticated technology can also be used. The leader of the opposition in the Loksabha criticised government's inaction to contain terrorism. Some experts opined that! There should be a separate agency to tackle terrorism, 2. Laws should be made stricter and 3.People's involvement is a must for tackling the menace of terrorism. Gandhiji and several other leaders fought for India's independence for several years. But the free India has not been protecting the rights of it's citizens guaranteed in the Indian constitution.
