TDP MLA launches fast for short supply of jute bags Eluru, May 15 (INN): Protesting against the state government's failure to provide jute bags at paddy purchasing centres in West Godavari, Telugu Desam Party MLA from Denduluru Chintamaneni Prabhakhar on Saturday night began a hunger fast in front of District Collectorate bungalow in Eluru.
According to reports, the TDP MLA began the dharna protesting against the state government's negligence in setting up more paddy purchasing centres and the government's failure to provide jute bags to farmers due to which purchase of paddy has been halted in the district.
Earlier, the MLA along with district farmers staged a rasta roko on Visakhapatnam-Vijayawada National Highway protesting the government failure to provide enough number of jute bags.
The MLA and the farmers also disregarded police attempts to convince them not to disrupt traffic on the National Highway and continued with their dharna. The police was then forced to use batons and disperse the protestors. They also shifted the MLA to the police station, but did not lodge a case.
According to the MLA's followers, Mr Chintamaneni Prabhakhar was made to sit in the police station right through the night. It then launched the hunger fast in front of the district Collectorate.
Meanwhile, Minister for Civil Supplies D Sridhar Babu enquired about the incident with the TDP leaders in the district. The Minister assured the MLA that the government would take measures for the supply of enough number of jute bags for lifting of paddy in the district. Mr Sridhar Babu also appealed to the MLA to withdraw his hunger fast.
