No hunger strike in Nellore Jail: Superintendant Nellore, May 6 (INN): Superintendant of Nellore Central Jail K Nageswara Rao on Sunday denied reports that the inmates of the prison have went on hunger strike.
Nageshwara Rao told INN that a section of media has carried false reports that the inmates went on hunger strike after they had a clash with the jail wardens over throwing of food wastage.
It was also reported in a section of media that eight prisoners had an argument with the wardens after they were rebuked for throwing food wastage in the drainage line on Saturday.
As a punishment, those inmates were reportedly placed in a separate cell. Consequently, the other inmates went on hunger strike. Later, some political groups staged dharna before the prison.
A few of them wanted to go inside the prison to speak to the inmates. However, they were not permitted to do so.
However, the Jail Superintendant denied the reports and said that no inmate went on hunger strike.
He said a senior official and a judge had visited the jail since Saturday evening and found the reports of hunger strike to be incorrect.
About 300 convicts and nearly 100 remand accused are lodged in the Nellore Central Prison.
