Godavari on the rise Rajahmundry: The water level of River Godavari is rising swiftly due to heavy rain that is lashing its catchment areas.
Normally flood season starts from July as per the irrigation calendar, but flood season has begun 15 days earlier as monsoon is moving quickly. Rains in catchment areas of Godavari are causing floods.
The water level at Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage at Dowlaiswaram is 8.30 ft. About 2.24 lakh cusecs of surplus water is being released into the sea and 3,200 cusecs of water is being released to three major canals for irrigation purpose.
All the 175 gates of barrage were lifted up to 0.50 meters. The water level at Bhadrachalam is 25.30 ft at 6 pm on Monday and water level may slightly increase at Dowlaiswaram Barrage by Tuesday morning.
It may be recalled that there was no surplus water at the barrage on June 17 last year and only 3,400 cusecs water has been released for irrigation purposes in the same period during the last year.
