Telangana hardens stand on EAMCET counselling HYDERABAD: Hyderabad: Telangana government has hardened its stand on EAMCET counselling despite the fact that the AP State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) has set the ball rolling by announcing August 7 as the date on which certificate verification will begin.
The Telangana government says that since a petition filed by it is pending in the Supreme Court, it would take a decision based on the outcome of the case and not before.
The case is coming up for hearing on August 4 by which time the government wants to file documents explaining how the fee reimbursement initiated by the erstwhile Congress govt had turned into a scam.
Telangana Education Minister G Jagadeeswara Reddy wanted to dissociate himself and the Telangana state from the decision of the APSCHE. 'We are no way concerned with what the AP government does with regard to admissions to professional colleges. If they want to go ahead with counselling, let them. For us, AP is like Maharashtra and Karnataka. We will not interfere in AP affairs,' he said.
While the Telangana government does not seem to budge, the APSCHE has decided to seek a direction from the SC before it delivers its final verdict on what it should do with regard to admissions. APSCHE Chairman L Venugopal Reddy said: 'We will send a letter to the Supreme Court with all facts before it takes any decision on the future of counselling.'
According to Prof Venugopal Reddy, the decision to begin certificate verification was taken in the interests of students. 'We have received many representations from several bodies and parents to begin counselling as early as possible. But due to well known reasons it got delayed,' he said.
Any further delay in conducting counselling would result in the loss of one full year to ECET candidates and a substantial part of the first year to EAMCET candidates.
As per the decision of council taken on Monday, the notification for certificate verification is supposed to be out on Wednesday. But Reddy did not clarify if the notification would be released. He said: 'It will be decided on Wednesday.' He refused to comment when asked if there was any pressure from the Telangana government.
The APSCHE cannot go ahead with counselling without fee reimbursement issue being resolved and without the Telangana govt's nod.
