KCR's dream water pipeline runs for 1,26,036 km HYDERABAD: In its pursuit to provide potable water to all households in the State, the Telangana government would lay a total of 1,26,036 km water pipeline that includes main trunk line, secondary lines and distribution networks.
Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao claimed that the length of water line would set a world record, becoming the longest water pipeline built anywhere in the world.
After reviewing the maps, contours designed by the officials using Google Earth pertaining to the availability of water bodies and geographical conditions here, the Chief Minister said the government was attaching great importance to meet the drinking needs of the people.
Explaining the magnitude of the project, he said, 'The length of water pipeline proposed by the government is four times that of Earth's circumference, which is 33,000 km'. The proposed water pipeline will include 5,227 km of main trunk line, 45,089 km of secondary network and 75,000 km distribution channels.
Choppers for water grid survey
KCR ordered officials to carry out a survey using helicopters to develop 24 water grids in next four years. The government is planning to issue tenders in two months. It is estimated that the project would cost around Rs 27,000 crore.
The Chief Minister instructed the officials to design the water grid in such a way that even industries receive water from the same facility, besides catering to the drinking water needs of the people.
He ordered the officials to carry out an extensive research on water requirements of various cities, villages, hospitals and other industries. The water grid should be designed with a foresight to cater to the requirements of next 30 years, he added. The Chief Minister suggested to the officials to identify contours to supply water to villages instead of relying on lifts.
He identified 670-metre tall contour in Lakshmidevipalli of Mahbubnagar as the tallest contour in the State and would help in supplying water to many parts in Telangana.
Similarly, he listed out Padmakshigutta in Warangal and Gudegulagutta in Medak as available contours which would enable officials to supply water to villages in respective districts.
Besides, to ensure availability of water throughout the year, he ordered the officials to make necessary arrangements by building storage tanks on rivers, if required. He ordered the officials to conduct a extensive survey on availability of water in Krishna-Godavari basin, which would serve as the core of the entire water grid in the State.
