Former SIMI chief Salahuddin dies in road mishap HYDERABAD: Former president of the proscribed Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) died and his driver was hospitalised after receiving serious injuries in a road accident in Nalgonda district on Saturday.
Syed Salahuddin was the former president of SIMI, which is a banned organisation. He was native of Nalgonda district and resident of Babanagar in the city.
According to police, the mishap took place when the victim was returning to the city after attending a function in Nalgonda. The driver, who was trying to overtake another vehicle, lost control over his vehicle hit a truck. In the mishap, Salahuddin received serious head injuries and was shifted to a hospital in the city where doctors declared him brought dead.
Salahuddin, who finished B.Tech, was the national president of SIMI since 1998. However, after the outfit came on the radar of the investigation agencies for their alleged linkages with terror groups, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested Salahuddin two years ago in connection with Saibaba Temple blast in Dilsukhnagar in 2002.
After coming out of jail, Salahuddin shifted base to Dubai and other countries and worked as as civil engineer for over 8 years. Sources said that during his presidentship of SIMI, many youths joined the organisation.
