Rahul vows to rebuild Visakhapatnam VISAKHAPATNAM: AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi has promised that his party would bring pressure on the central government to quickly rebuild the cyclone-hit Visakhapatnam city.
Accompanied by Congress leaders from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Rahul went on a whirlwind tour of the cyclone-affected areas in Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram districts upon his arrival in the city Sunday. He is expected to visit Srikakulam district before leaving for Delhi Monday.
Interacting with the cyclone-victims at a slum in Thatichetlapalem area here, Rahul Gandhi said that the Lok Sabha members of the Congress would fight to get a reasonable compensation for the victims which included various public sector organisations.
'Vizag is a green city and a very beautiful one. It is unfortunate that the cyclone has devastated the city and its green cover, but we will stand by the people of the city on the road to recovery,' he said.
Earlier, Rahul visited the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) and assured the employees that he would ensure that justice is done to them. He told the VSP staff that he was here to personally see the hardships being faced by the people.
Later in the evening, he presented cheques for `52 lakh to the next of kin of the cyclone victims. APCC president N Raghuveera Reddy, Telangana PCC president Ponnala Lakshmaiah, former PCC chief Botcha Satyanarayana, former Union ministers K Chiranjeevi and JD Seelam, Rajya Sabha member T Subbarami Reddy accompanied Rahul.
