Congress fields Sridevi in Tirupati bypoll TIRUPATI:The Congress named R Sridevi, a DWCRA group leader, as its candidate for the bypoll to the Tirupati Assembly seat, slated to be held on Feb 13.
Sridevi, who will file her nomination papers on Tuesday - the last date for filing nominations, will take on TDP's nominee M Suguna, widow of M Venkataramana. It was his recent death that has led to the by-election.
With APCC chief N Raghuveera Reddy announcing the candidature of Sridevi, speculations that the Congress was having second thoughts about contesting the bypoll have ended.
The speculations were the result of a divided opinion among the partymen at a recent meeting of the state-level coordination committee here in the presence of AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh.
Incidentally, the announcement of Sridevi's candidature has come amidst hectic efforts by the TDP to ensure the unanimous election of Suguna.
While the Congress has decided to jump into the fray, the main opposition party - the Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSR Congress Party -- is understood to have decided to keep off the bypoll in keeping with the tradition of allowing the kin of a dead MLA to get elected unanimously.
However it has become a multi-cornered contest. But the main fight will be between TDP's Suguna and Congress candidate Sridevi.
