TS govt set to hike power tarrif HYDERABAD:The Telangana government is likely to administer a mild power shock to its consumers. Though the power tariff hike is inevitable, it will not be steep.
The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) had earlier suggested a 15 to 20 per cent hike in states which have been regularly revising the power tariff. 'The tariff hike in Telangana will be within that limit,' sources in the energy sector said.
The CERC recommended the hike for sustenance of Discoms. The Telangana Discoms will file their annual revenue requirements (ARRs) before TSERC on Saturday.
The main focus in the ARRs will be on how to curtail transmission and distribution losses and conserve power. As the state is facing shortage of power, reducing losses and improving the efficiency of power utilities will help in reduction of power cuts. 'We want to improve the efficiency of the power utilities. Focus will be on the same in the ARRs,' official sources said.
Thanks to bifurcation of the state, consumers did not get a tariff shock last year. The newly-constituted Telangana State Electricity Regulatory Commission (TSERC) has asked the two Telangana Discoms, TSNPDCL and TSSPDCL, to submit their ARRs.
The revised pay scale for employees and pensioners is also causing financial burden on Discoms. Hence the need for a marginal increase in the power tariff.
