Mild tremors felt in AP Capital region Mild tremors were felt in certain pockets of AP capital region on Monday afternoon. Mild tremors were felt in Shavalyapuram Mandal in Guntur which left residents in shock. The tremors lasted for about 4 seconds.The proposed Capital of Andhra Pradesh Amaravathi will be based in the tremor-hit areas.
The new capital region comes under Zone-III (moderate seismic zone) and it' has witnessed tremors four times in the recent past.A recent report prepared by the GSI(Geological Survey of India) says the low fundamental frequency of ground motion occupies the soft sediment. The report says that buildings of three or more stores are not suitable in many places in Krishna and Guntur districts along the Krishna river bank.
Even Shivaramakrishnan committee also opined the same.According to the committee, the non-engineered buildings and poor quality multi-storied constructions in Vijayawada and Guntur are at moderate risk. With the tremors the issue of locating the new capital city in between Vijayawada and Guntur has once again become a debating point.
