AP Govt directs varsities to act tough against ragging Hyderabad, Aug 3 (INN): The Andhra Pradesh Government has directed all the all the Universities and Educational Institutions in the State to take strict and stringent measures to prevent any incidence of ragging.
The Vice-Chancellors of various Universities and Principals and Heads of Educational Institutions in the State have been specifically asked to educate and sensitize the students about the repercussions and legal provisions regarding offences taken in the A.P. Prohibition of Ragging Act of 1997. The Universities and Educational Institutions have also been advised to scrupulously follow the guidelines issued by UGC in UGC Regulations On Curbing The Menace of Ragging in Higher Education Institutions, 2009 (Under Section 26 (1)(g) of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956) for bringing awareness among the students community about the penal consequences against those indulging in ragging.
Since the academic session for the year 2015-76 have commenced and classes are being started, immediate action has to be taken by all the educational institutions to give wide publicity by conducting seminars, display of posters, distribution of pamphlets, display of slides in cinema theatres, conducting lecturers by important officials like Police, Revenue and other Government officials, placing of CC cameras wherever required in typical and sensitive areas, non-admission of outsiders into the hostels; regulation of entry into hostels and mess through bio-metric system, periodical inspection by senior officials etc.,
They have been specifically informed to publicise that ragging within or outside of any educational institution is prohibited u/s. 3 of A. P, Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1997 and maximum punishment under said Act is imprisonment for life or with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 10 years and with a fine which may extend to Rs. 50,000/-. They have been further informed wherever negligence on the part of' administration is noticed, severe action on such erring officials will be taken according to the provisions of Law, according to Secretary to Government of Higher Education Department.
