10 killed as bus falls into canal Hyderabad, Aug 22 (INN): At least ten persons were killed and 18 were injured when a bus fell into a canal near Nayakangudem in Khammam district in the wee hours of Monday.
The accident occurred when the bus lost control and fell off a bridge on Nagarjunasagar canal. The bus of a private travel firm was on its way to Kakinada from Hyderabad, police said. The injured were admitted to the district hospital in Khammam.
As many as 36 passengers were on board the private tourist bus (AP 26 TC 9512) which left for Rajahmundry from Miyapur in Hyderabad at about 11.30 PM on Sunday. However, it met with the accident at about 2.30 AM on Monday. Most of the victims hailed from East Godavari district.
The victims have been identified as V. Raju (38), P. Durga Rao (41), P. Lakshmi Shravani (38), Sumanta Bucharao (22), A. Ashok Kumar (27), K. Prashant (22), Sk. Azharuddin (45), Ramesh (40) and Venkat Subba Reddy (59). One more victim was yet to be identified.
Chief Ministers K. Chandrasekhar Rao (Telangana) and N. Chandrababu Naidu (Andhra Pradesh) have expressed shock over the accident and extended sympathies with the family members of those killed and injure in the accident. AP's Deputy CM China Rajappa visited the spot and also met the injured persons at the hospital. He announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 3 lakh each to the kin of those killed in the accident.
YSRCP chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy demanded an ex-gratia for families of the deceased and injured in the bus accident. He demanded Rs 5 lakh to families of deceased and Rs. 50,000 ex-gratia each for the injured persons.
