Minister proposes Traffic Safety drive in every quarter Hyderabad, Jan 22 (INN): Transport Minister Mahender Reddy proposed that the awareness campaign on road safety shoudl be held at least once in every quarter.
Addressing the Traffic Safety Week programme at KBR Park on Sunday, the minister said accidents and fatalities could be minimised by creating awareness among the people. Stating that nearly 7,000 people were getting killed in road accidents every year, he said there was a need for strong legislation to prevent minors from driving vehicles. He said stern action should be taken against parents who allow their minor children to drive vehicles. Further, he said as per the directives of Supreme Court, all liquor shops on highways would be closed so to prevent cases of drunken driving.
The minister also informed that a driving training centre was being established in Sircilla at a cost of Rs. 18 crore. He said drivers of international standards would be prepared in the proposed driving centre. He said similar driving training centres would be established all across Telangana State. He asked the petrol bunk owners to implement the rule of "No Helmet, No Petrol". He also asked the educational institutions and NGOs to constitute Road Safety Clubs.
The programme was also addressed by Hyderabad Police Commissioner Mahender Reddy, DCP Venkateshwar Rao and other officials.
