Sania wishes to be No 1 in Tennis doubles Hyderabad : After winning the WTA Finals doubles title with her Zimbabwean partner Cara Black, ace tennis star Sania Mirza termed the year 2014 as an incredible year in her career. Speaking at her tennis academy on her return from Singapore, Sania said, 'To finish off the season like this, it's good. Basically, I achieved what any tennis player wants to achieve in a year, win a Slam, win a gold medal and win the year-end Championships.
It has been an incredible year for me. Especially, to finish off the partnership (with Black) this way, on such a high, winning the way we did in the final. It has been pretty amazing.' Apart from the WTA title, Sania won the mixed doubles title at the US Open along with Bruno Soars and bagged mixed doubles gold and doubles bronze representing India at the 17th Asian Games in Incheon.
The Telangana Brand Ambassador said that she was happy to win the titles for the country and do her bit in every possible way to promote her newly-formed Telangana State. 'I felt honoured when Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao called me for a meeting to announce it.
It was a big boost for me. I am happy I could contribute to building the image of the State all over the world, as people are acknowledging the new State. The week before the WTA Finals, the Chief Minister said that he would have a meeting soon. I will be glad to discuss a few things which should help our cause,' Sania said.
The 27-year-old Hyderabadi added that the Prime Minister's tweet was a wonderful gesture. 'It is a great feeling when the Prime Minister tweets about your success. They are very encouraging gestures.
The two times I met him, he was very supportive and showed genuine concern for the welfare of the athletes. When he observed that the whole nation rejoices when athletes like me sweat it out and bring laurels, I was honestly thrilled,' Sania remarked. 'The best part is because of the social networking sites, you can connect directly with anyone,' she added. After ending the season on a high, Sania is aiming to reach the numero uno position in the doubles next year.
'I am getting closer to my goal which is to try and be number one in the world. I got a Slam this year, won the Championships. That's one of my goals. So, I will try and be number one. Hopefully, that will happen next year,' she said. She also said that the secret for is hard work and nothing else.
'There is no secret, unfortunately. You have to work. You have to keep working. As long as you keep working, it will come. It does not happen overnight as people think and hope that it happens. It has been a long career for me. I have been doing it for 21 years of my life. I cannot think of doing anything else at least at this point of time. When you are down, you have to work even harder. That's when you come through,' she concluded.
