HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh government on Friday abolished Y S Rajasekhara Reddy's pet program "Adarsha Rythu" (model farmer) on the grounds that it failed to achieve the intended goal of creating the agriculture extension awareness among the farming community.
Introduced by YSR in 2007 when he was the chief minister, 49,161 Adarsha Rythus were nominated in the undivided state of Andhra Pradesh. Over a period of time, the Adarsha Rythu became so important that his recommendation became necessary for farmers to get agricultural benefits. The Adarsha Rythus got a remuneration of Rs 1000 per month from the government. The system had been introduced in tune with the Swaminathan commission's recommendations. Later, complaints of corruption and misuse of the farmers for the political purpose plagued the system.
After the division, Andhra Pradesh was left with 29,439 Adarsha Rytus. The GO issued on Friday said the Adarsha Rythus had failed to generate awareness among the farmers in extension work and also failed to achieve the desired results as they were not well qualified. "In addition, certain allegations were also raised against Adarsha Rythus from the farming community from time to time on issues like preparation of enumeration lists, disbursement of input subsidy and allotment of implements," the GO said.
