* Based on the writings of Dr. Randall Hansen
With so many new & specialised career options emerging, switching careers is a natural outcome. Here's how to make a smooth transition...*
Assess your likes & dislikes
Identifying dislikes is easier part of this step. Spend time to rediscover yourself & direct yourself to a new career search.
Look for new careers
Once you've discovered or rediscovered your passion, spend some time researching the types of careers that will satisfy your passions.
Transferable skills
Leverage some of your current skills to your new career. You may be surprised to see that you already have a solid base for your new career.
Training & education
Train yourself for the big leap. Start slowly. Take a course to ensure you like the subject matter. Polish your communication skills. Broaden your network by joining professional organisations in your new field & contact alumni from your college who are working in the field you want to enter.
Gaining Experience
Remember, you are starting your career from square one again. Part-time job, freelance opportunities, do whatever it takes to gain the experience.
Find a Mentor
Changing careers is a major life decision. Find a mentor who can help you through the rough patches.
Changing in or out
Changing careers does not necessarily mean changing the employer. Remember not to ask about a job switch until you are completely ready to do so.
Refresh your job-hunting skills
Upgrade your companies' database, resume resources, cover letter resources, interviewing resources, salary negotiation resources.
Be Flexible
You have to be flexible about everything from employment status to relocation & salary.
Set positive goals for yourself, but expect setbacks & change.
