Remembering Ernesto Che Guevara (1928-1967)

On October 9th 1967, The Bolivian army, with the help of the CIA murdered a great revolutionary who wanted to liberate the whole South American continent from the infulence of western imperialism. 'I know you have come to kill me. Shoot me, Coward! You will kill only a man', were his last words. His last words are so very true. He was killed, but he became a legend and an idol all over the world. His posters are the best sold all over the world. His image is tattoed on many bodies (even Argentinian soccerer Maradona tattoed him on his right arm). He is a hero in the country(USA) which badly wanted to see him dead. This shows that they could never really 'kill' him. People simply love his charm, morals, humanity and above all courage. He is one of the most popular figures even after 36 years of his death. He is the inspiration for many ongoing struggles in Peru, Columbia and Venezuela. He was born in Argentina, studied medicine with the aim of serving the lepers. When he went on a motor cycle ride all over the South America, he realised what poverty is like and how the people over suffer. He changed his course and from then was dedicated to fight for the cause of the poor. 'To die under the flag of Vietnam, of Venezuela, of Guatemala, of Laos, of Guinea, of Colombia, of Bolivia, of Brazil-to name only a few scenes of today's armed struggle-would be equally glorious and desirable for an American, an Asian, an African, even a European' - Che Guevara He exactly followed what he said. He fought in many countries all over south America (like Mexico city , Gautemala and Argentina, Bolivia) and also in Africa. He did that not for money or power or fame. He lived for what he believed in. He aided Castro in the Cuban revolution. He was the ambassador of cuba and the industrial minister of Cuba for a while. Later he renounced his citizenship and went to Congo and next to Bolivia to fight. I happened to read 'Bolivian Dairy' the last 11 months of his dairy. The US got hold of the dairy and wanted to sell it but Cubans got it photocopied and released it before the US could do it. 2,50,000 copies were sold immediately in few months. It is unfortunate that he died in a lot of hostile circumstances. Still, he showed a lot of endurance, courage, patience, sense of humour, humanity in those circumstances. With his asthama and oedema troubling him a lot, travelling through the hills in a foreign country sometimes without food and water. They hunted the animals and some of his comrades drank their own urine. The ignorant peasants not coperating and informing the army, many of his comrades being sick or dead, and his rifle refusing to work, he was captured by the Bolivian army. Fidel Castro said 'If we want to know how we want our children to be...we should say, with all our mind and heart: We want them to be like Che'. People all over the world look upto him as an idol, as a real man. He is a hero not only to millions and millions of Latin Americans but a hero all over the world. His death is a severe blow to Latin America but still his spirit survives. Very few people live even after they die. They live in the heart of millions. I love his courage. EL CHE VIVE.
