Whenever the prices increse, the fixed income people suffer the most. For example: a poor daily wage earner has to go for borowing instead of saving the hard earned money to meet his day to day expenditure. Thus if savings are reduced, the investments fall and lesser amount of goods and services are produced, leading to price rise (a vicious circle). Some times even the saved deposits are withdrawn to meet the rising expenditure. The reduction in dsposable income, also contributes to the reduction in demand for goods and services.
In the long run, the government has to 1.Increase the production and productivity of food grains by scientifically analysing the ground realities of present agriculture scenario in India. This leads to increase in the supply of food grains, 2.Strengthening the public distribution system by effectively targetting the poorest of the poor and the really needy people. This step will increase the purchasing power of the really poor people. 3.Developnig the alternative sources of energy like solar, tidal, bio-gas, wind etc. 4.Encouraging scientific research to find out any new sources of energy as we do not have the energy resources to fulfill the requirements of growing demands. 5.Drastic cut in the goverment's useless expenditure strictly. 6.As the goverment cannot solve all the problems, the citizens too should use the energy resources judiciously, the mass media should be effectively used to educate people about the efficient use of energy. 7.Finding out new petroleum/energy resources within India by using the latest technologies effectively.
The opposition parteis instead of criicising/politicising the issue should act constuctively by suggesting some new ways to tackle the issue, they should also remeber that the international prices of oil have increased 4 times when compared to the prices of 1996-97, the incomes of people also have increased considerably when compared to 1996-97,due to economic reforms intiated in 1991.
