Vijayawada women face highest crime rate HYDERABAD: Women living in Vijayawada are more vulnerable to crime compared to 52 other mega cities that figured in the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, the NCRB-2012.
According to NCRB, during 2012, women in Vijayawada filed 1,898 cases under various sections. The number of cases per one lakh women, which stands at 256.34 for Vijayawada, is the highest recorded in any of the 53 cities featured in the report.
The rate is much higher than Andhra Pradesh's 66.05 and and India's 60.81. Kollam in Kerala and Kota in Rajasthan are the only two other places that recorded a crime rate of over 100, but below 130. No other city in the country recorded more than 100 crimes against women.
With the 37.4 lakh women, Hyderabad had witnessed 1,899 crimes against women, but in Vijayawada with a women population of 7.40 lakh, it is only one crime less.
Hyderabad, Delhi, Bangalore and Kolkata have crime rates of 50.45, 68.56, 55.76 and 30.52 respectively.
Vijayawada has the dubious distinction of topping the list in crimes against women for the last six years, with the number rising every year, as per the NCRB website.
The crime rate in Vijayawada in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 is 96.2, 84.5, 92.6, 113.7 and 120.5 respectively. However, in 2012, it shot up to 256.
Vishakapatbanam, the only other city in the state to figure in the NCRB list, has 556 cases, at a rate of 65; the women population of the steel city is 8.55 lakh.
Vijayawada recorded 47 rapes, 39 kidnaps/abductions, 16 dowry deaths, 1,136 cases of harassment by in-laws, 223 assaults on Women with intent to outrage their modesty, 418 cases of insult to the modesty of women and 19 cases of immoral trafficking.
