5 killed, 1 missing as car plunges into canal Bhimavaram, Jan 16 (INN): At least five persons were killed on the spot while a woman was swept away after a car plunged into a canal near Vendra village in Palakoderu mandal in Bhimavaram Town in West Godavari district on Sunday morning.
According to Palakoderu Circle Inspector N Madhusudhan Rao, the incident took place after the car driver lost control over his vehicle and veered off the road to plunged into the adjoining canal. The ill-fated car belonged to Hyderabad and most its occupants were in the region to visit relatives and celebrate Sankranti festival. The mishap took place when the car was heading towards Bhimavaram Town from Vendra village in Palakoderu mandal.
The victims have been identified as Alluri Srinivasa Raju (41) his daughter Radha (14) hailing from Bhimavaram and M Anjaneyeshwara Reddy (35), Saraswathi (46) wife of seetharamaraju and Sai Abhinav Sharma (3) hailed from Hyderabad. Srinivasa Raju's wife Padma was missing and is believed to have drowned. The police have launched operations to trace her body. Police have shifted the bodies to Government hospital in Bhimavaram for postmortem.
Further investigations are on, the police said. Meanwhile a pall of gloom has descended in the village following the news of the mishap.
