From Mamidipally Village to Central Cabinet

Hyderabad, Feb 27 (INN): Former Union Minister P. Shiv Shankar passed away here on Monday after a prolonged illness. He was 89. He is survived by wife Dr. P. Laxmi Bai, two sons and a daughter.

Born on August 10, 1929 in Mamidipally village of Telangana, Shiv Shankar did his BA from Hindu College, Amritsar, and later completed LLB from University Law College, Osmania University.

Beginning his career as a lawyer, Shiv Shankar became a Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 1974. He resigned from the post in 1979 to contest the by-election to the Secunderabad Lok Sabha constituency on the Congress ticket. He had also served as a Union Minister in the cabinet of Indira Gandhi. He had also served as Governor of Sikkim and Kerela.

Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan expressed profound sadness on the passing away of Shiva Sankar. He recalled the yeoman services rendered by Sri Shiva Sankar as Union Minister and Governor of Sikkim and Kerala. His memory will be cherished for his immense contribution to the country, said the Governor.

The Governor conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the members of his family and prayed to the Almighty to give his family the strength and courage to bear with this irreparable loss.

Telangana Chief Minister K.Chandrasekhar Rao visited his residence in Jubilee Hills and offered floral tributes. He has expressed his shock over the death of Shiva Shankar.

In a message here, the Chief Minister recalled the services rendered by Shiva Shankar as a BC leader, Union Minister, Judge and Governor. He has conveyed his heartfelt sympathies to the members of the bereaved family and prayed for the departed soul.

TPCC President N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, YSR Congress Party president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, BJP president Dr. K. Lakshman and other leaders also expressed their condolences of the demise of Shiv Shankar.

According to family sources, the last rites would be performed at the Puranapul crematorium on Tuesday morning. The Chief Minister has instructed the officials concerned to make arrangements for the official funeral of the departed leader who happens to be from Telangana region. He asked the Chief Secretary SP Singh to take care of the arrangements.
