Muslim MLCs demand JLC on Wakf land encroachments Hyderabad, March 28 (INN): Muslim MLCs, cutting across the political affiliations, on Monday wanted the state government to discuss on the issue of selling and encroachment Wakf lands both during the period of TDP and the Congress in the state. The MLCs demanded a House Committee to go into the details in this regard.
The members, Shaik Hussain, Hafiz Peer Shabbir Ahmed, Md Jani (all Congress), Ibrahim bin Abdullah Masquati (TDP) in their adjournments wanted Legislative Council Chairman A Chakrapani to come to their rescue in protection of Wakf land works crores of rupees. Dr Chakrapani however disallowed their adjournment motions.
Mr Shaik Hussain pointed out that as many as 1.60 lakh acres of Wakf land was donated by the then Nawabs and Muslim philanthropist for religious purpose such construction of Masjids and Madrasas with a sole intention for the welfare of minorities, but a major chunk of the Wakf lands was either encroached upon or sold to various persons by the then TDP government between 1995 to 2004.
He demanded the government to constitute a House Committee to go into the details in this connection. Mr Hafiz Peer Shabbir Ahmed said that the Wakf lands in the entire AP in general and Hyderabad and RR district in particular were either encroached upon or sold by the governments. He wanted the government to enquire into this right from 1995 till present.
Mr Shabbir Ahmed reminded that the then Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi had ordered the state governments either to pay the amount of the value of the Wakf land taken by the government to Wakf Board or to return such land which was encroached upon by the government or individuals.
He added that fortunately the Congress is in the ruling both in the Centre and state, a necessary action can be taken in this regard. Mr Md Jani said around 40,000 acres of Wakf land was sold to firms and individuals in the state since 1994.
Mr Masquati alleged that both the TDP and Congress utterly failed to protect the land belonging to the Wakf, it the property of the Almighty Allah, and the government is the custodian. He added that it is nothing but, ' Halwai Ki Dukaan per Dada Ke Fatiha, (Observing an anniversary at the sweetmeat shops, without spending anything). He too demanded the government either to constitute a JLC or House Committee to go into the details of Wakf lands.
