Thieves steal jewellery worth Rs 20 lakh Tirupati, April 29 (INN): Unidentified miscreants set a jewellery shop on fire after stealing gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 20 lakh at Tirupati in Chittoor district in the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.
According to CCS Inspector Rasool, the thieves managed to break into the shop by cutting the steel shutter of the Sri Jewellery shop near Devender Theater in the temple town with a gas-cutter and lay their hands on gold ornaments weighing about one and half a kilo grams and silver about half a kilo gram. The thieves also set the shop on fire before fleeing.
Inspector Rasool said that the police believe that the fire was started to eliminate any clues. The police and fire personnel rushed to the spot on getting information. The fire was soon brought under control.
The Inspector said that the modus operandi suggested that the theft was the handiwork of thieves who may hail from neighbouring Karnataka and Tamil Nadu states. A case has been registered and a manhunt has been launched to nab the absconding thieves. Further investigations are on.
