After 5 Years, Sonia meet in Telangana today HYDERABAD: AICC chief Sonia Gandhi is all set to address her maiden public meeting in Telangana after bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.
Exactly five years after she had made the promise of delivering the T-state, the AICC supremo is visiting Karimnagar on Wednesday. She will address a public meeting at Ambedkar Stadium.
Interestingly, TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao too had begun his party's campaign trail from Karimnagar the other day. T-Congress leaders are making elaborate arrangements to accord a grand welcome to their party supremo.
According to TPCC leaders, their party chief would arrive at Begumpet airport here on Wednesday at 3 pm by a special flight. From there, she will fly to Karimnagar in a helicopter. After taking part in the public meeting, the UPA chairperson will return to Delhi via Hyderabad on Wednesday itself.
As Sonia's meeting has political significance, all the T-Congress heavyweights are camping in Karimnagar and making all efforts to make the programme a success.
It may be recalled that Sonia Gandhi, during her public meeting at Karimnagar during the 2009 polls, announced that the Congress had no objection to accord statehood to Telangana, if it regains power in the 2009 polls.
After the 2009 polls, the AICC chief did not undertake any political visit to the State. She visited Hyderabad to pay her respects to the mortal remains of the late YS Rajasekhara Reddy, when the latter was killed in a chopper accident. Later, she did an aerial survey of the flood-hit regions in Seemandhra along with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
'During the meeting, Madam Sonia Gandhi will tell the people of the T-state that the Congress, which has delivered the new state will also take up full responsibility to develop it on all fronts if the UPA hits a hat-trick in the upcoming general polls,' said MP Ponnam Prabhakar.
