No takers for over 73,000 Engg seats

HYDERABAD: That engineering seats will go abegging has been proved once again. At the end of the first phase counselling for admission to engineering and pharmacy colleges in Telangana and Andhra, as many as 73,059 seats remained vacant.

In Andhra Pradesh, 57,382 seats remained unfilled and in Telangana, the number was 15,677 despite the fact that 174 colleges had been disqualified from participating in the counselling.

According to official sources, the main reason for the poor response was sub-standard colleges and the delay in commencement of counselling which forced a number of students to take admission outside Telangana and AP.

In both TS and AP, the number of seats available for students was 1,89,088 of which 1,16,029 seats were filled as against the eligible candidates of 2.03 lakh students. In AP, in 326 colleges, 63,190 of the 1,20,572 seats were filled. In Telangana, in 149 colleges, 63,190 seats were filled.

The total number of eligible candidates was 2,03,450 including 88,937 in Telangana.

Of them, 1,22,389 students including 56558 in Telangana turned up for verfication of certificates. Of them, 1,20,098 including 55,094 students exercised web options. Of them, 1,16,029 including 52,839 students in Telangana have been allotted seats.

As for the management quota, the Telangana State Council of Higher Education does not want AP State Council of Higher Education to have anything to do with it in respect of colleges in Telangana. 'Filling of seats in management quota would be done by the TSCHE,' its chairman T Papi Reddy said.

As regards second phase of counselling, the date has not yet been decided. It may, according to sources, take two to three days but the Telangana government is contemplating to move the Supreme Court for a direction for exclusion of 174 colleges in Telangana whose affiliation to JNTU-H has been cancelled for 2014-15, from second phase of counselling. Meanwhile, the APSCHE advised students to report to colleges to which they were allotted on or before Sept 6.
