Telugu students in Manipur NIT seek transfer HYDERABAD: At least 19 Telugu students of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Manipur, have demanded the Union Human Resources Ministry that they should be transferred to other NITs in the country. They made the demand in the wake of attack on them on the NIT campus recently.
Meanwhile, additional director general of police, Armed Police and Training, Manipur, P Mallana Goud, who is part of the investigation team, told that the situation was under control and police took measures to prevent such instances in future.
One of the Telugu students of NIT, Manipur, B Ravi Teja told that in consultation with other Telugus and non- local students on the campus, they have taken a decision to meet HRD minister Smriti Irani and request her to shift them to other NITs.
'It was not first time that the local students have assaulted non-local students. This type of incidents have take place on the campus earlier too. Though the non- locals brought the issue to the notice of the NIT management, they failed to take proper action,' a student said.
Police suspect that some political leaders might have been involved in the incident. As many as 25 persons armed with iron rods gained entry into the campus and assaulted the non-locals. Meanwhile police said that the curfew imposed on the campus was relaxed on Monday.
