Govt aims to benefit cronies in capital building VIJAYAWADA: Former minister Vadde Sobhanadreeswara Rao has criticised the government for its decision to construct the capital city in one lakh acres of land saying that there is no need for acquiring so much land for the purpose.
Addressing a press conference here, he said that the capital with all essential facilities could be constructed in about 3,000-4,000 acres and demanded that the state government elicit public opinion before embarking on capital construction.
Rao alleged that the government's efforts for construction of the capital on either side of the Krishna river was aimed at benefiting those who had purchased vast stretches of land in Krishna and Guntur.
'I believe it's time to call a spade a spade. The government's move to acquire 30,000 acres of land in the first phase for construction of the capital city was not acceptable. The government cannot threaten land owners (farmers) to part with their land for the capital. It has to convince the farmers before acquiring the land,' he said.
He expressed doubts over the Central assistance to the state government for the construction of the capital and said that the Union government had offered only Rs 200 crore for Naya Raipur city.
