Amaravati chosen as 'Heritage City' GUNTUR: Amaravati, the ancient capital of Andhra Desam, located on the banks of River Krishna in the Guntur district has been selected as one of the 'Heritage Cities' in the country and marked for development.
Disclosing this to newsmen here, Narasaraopet MP Rayapati Sambasiva Rao said that Union Minister of Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu had conveyed this news to him telephonically from New Delhi.
Expressing his happiness over Amaravathi being selected as a 'Heritage City', Sambasiva Rao said in the first phase, development works would be taken up with an outlay of Rs 20 cr. The allocation of funds for various works would be done based on the report to be submitted by the District Collector, he added.
Amaravati was known as Dharanikota and was one the most thriving centres of Buddhism in ancient times. It was in Amaravati that 'Kalachakra' of Buddhism had commenced. In 2006, the 30th Kalachakra, the Buddhist summit for world peace, was held.
Amaravati was also the capital of the Satavahanas, Ikshvakus, Pallavas, Eastern Chalukyas, Telugu Cholas, who had ruled large parts of Andhra Desa for centuries.
