Anjali Devi statue unveiled at Peddapuram Yesteryear actress Anjali Devi's statue unveiled today in Peddapuram by her elder son Chenna Rao. Nagaraju, Subramanyam who played the roles of Lava and Kusha in yesteryear classic 'Lava Kusha' graced the event and shared their sweet memories of Anjali Devi they had with the legendary actress.
Born in 1928 as Anjani Kumar, she made her cinematic debut as a child artist in a 1936 film. It was director C. Pullaiah who rechristened Anjani as Anjali Devi. In 1947, she made her debut as a lead heroine opposite Akkineni Nageswara Rao in Telugu family drama "Balaraju".
Her portrayal of goddess Sita, opposite legendary actor N.T. Rama Rao in 'Lava Kusha' in the year 1963, had a tremendous impact with many people in Andhra literally treating her like a goddess.
Anjali Devi was married to music director P Adinarayana Rao and the couple have two sons. Her granddaughter Saila Rao is also an actress. She died at the age of 86 on 13 January 2014 at Vijaya Hospital, in Chennai.
