Wake up to beach erosion threat: Jagan to Govt VISAKHAPATNAM: Unless the State government opens its eyes to beach erosion, as many as 300 villages on the coast would vanish affecting 13 lakh people's livelihood. The government should take permanent measures to arrest the erosion, demanded YS Jaganmohan Reddy, Opposition leader and YSR Congress Party president.
Jagan, along with party leaders visited the recently eroded beach areas here. On the occasion, Jagan said that as per reports out of the 1,000-km coast line, about 450-km beach is facing wave fury. Because of lack of corrective measures, three fourths of Uppada near Kakinada had been swallowed by the sea, he said.
'Chief minister Chandrababu Naidu, soon after coming to power toured several countries but he is not taking up the beach erosion issue with the international experts. The long coast is the wealth and strength of Andhra Pradesh and it will play a vital role in maritime trade of the state.
The government should take up permanent measures on priority to arrest beach erosion,' Jagan said. The state government should discuss the matter with experts from Andhra University, he said.
Jagan also expressed his anguish over the salinisation of several Godavari and Krishna delta areas. Unless a permanent solution was taken up, there would be a huge negative impact on the state, Jagan said.
Later, Jagan had darshan of Lord Sri Varahalakshmi Nrusimha Swami at Simhachalam temple. In the evening, he participated in the annual celebrations at Sri Sarada Peetam in Pendurty and received the blessings of Peetam Seer Sri Swaroopanandendra Saraswati.
