Experts raise concern over Caesarean Sections Hyderabad, April 13 (INN): Experts have expressed serious concerns over the emerging trend of extremely high rates of Caesarean Section.
The UNICEF, in partnership with Telangana Government and the Centre for Economic and Social Studies (CESS), convened a two-day National Consultation on "Rising Rates of Caesarean Sections: A Cause for Concern". Key representatives from the Union Ministry of Health, WHO, professional physician bodies, officials from health departments of various states, the NGO and public health community, as well as public and private health facilities, have come together for this series of discussions.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Dinesh Baswal, Deputy Commissioner, Maternal Health, Union Ministry of Health, said, "The Government of India is closely monitoring this situation. While ensuring all women have access to quality, comprehensive obstetric must remain a focus; we need to expand our vision to include the rapidly escalating rates of caesarean we are seeing."
In its 2015 statement paper on caesareans, the WHO concluded that, "caesarean section rates higher than 10% (of all deliveries) are not associated with (further) reductions in maternal and new-born mortality rates."
FOGSI Secretary Dr. Shanta Kumari said that there was a rise in caesarean section as people want to deliver baby as per 'Muhurat'. She described it as a dangerous trend. Further, she said neither doctors nor patients were willing to take any risks in normal deliveries.
Telangana's Commissioner of Health & Family Welfare Dr. Buddha Prakash M. Jyothi said according to a private survey there was a rise in caesarean section across Telangana State. It was 64% in Karimnagar, 60% in Nalgonda, 45% in Warangal, 40% in Khammam and about 20% in Mahabubnagar and Ranga Reddy districts.
