Mixed response for bandh to protest lathicharge
Hyderabad, July 25 (INN): The Medak district shutdown called by the opposition parties on Monday evoked a mixed response. Police detained leaders of opposition parties heading to express solidarity against the Mallannasagar project in Medak district.
The leaders were planning to meet the villagers who were injured in police lathi-charge on Sunday.
Congress leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha, Telangana JAC chairman Prof. M. Kodandaram, Telugu Desam Party working president Revanth Reddy were among those who were arrested. Prof Kodandaram was obstructed at Ontimamidi where he was arrested while on his way to address the affected farmers.
Speaking to media persons, the Opposition leaders slammed the state government alleging that on one hand it was grabbing the lands of farmers and on the other it was unleashing terror through resorting to lathi-charge.
Meanwhile, Irrigation Minister Harish Rao alleged that the opposition parties were provoking people and this led to the Sunday's violence.
Speaking to the media persons, here on Monday, Harish Rao refuted the charges of Opposition parties that the government was forcing the farmers to part with their lands.
He said that the people in six villages agreed to give their lands to the government, while the locals of only two villages were left. The people are voluntarily coming to hand over their land to the government, but the Opposition is unable to digest this and they are leaving no stone unturned to stall the prestigious project, the minister added.
In a related development, Irrigation minister, who was scheduled to leave for Japan with an official delegation, cancelled his visit at the last minute. Officials said that the visit was cancelled in the wake of violent protests in Medak district on Sunday that injured several farmers after police canned them.
