NDRF battalion base at Mangalagiri Vijayawada, Feb 8 (INN): National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Vice-Chairman Marri Sasidhar Reddy on Tuesday stated that the Central Government has planned to set up the 10th battalion of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), at Mangalagiri in Guntur district. Mr Sasidhar Reddy stated that the setting up of the force at Mngalagiri would go a long way in the speedy deployment of rescue teams to coastal areas at times of natural calamities.
Talking to media persons, the NDMA vice-chairman stated the government has proposed to set up permanent NDRF with 1,000 people in the 50 acres of land behind Panakalaswamy Temple Hill in Mangalagiri. He said the Guntur district collector has already allotted the land to house the NDRF battallion and the government will begin construction works on their dwellings soon.
Mr Shasidhar Reddy added that the Centre has already allocated Rs 151.58 crore for various works relating to the stationing of the battalion. He added that a 77-member team from Orissa has been deployed at Vijayawada to oversee the operations. The National Disaster Management Authority Vice-Chairman added that the Centre has released Rs 700 crore to construct roads and bridges on National Highways, which were damaged in the Coastal Andhra Pradesh due to heavy rains.
